About
CANAVERE is first of all a name, the name of a Mas nestled in the middle of the Camargue, between the two arms of the Rhône.
Built in 1500, at the time it was a simple watchtower, which was used to monitor the surroundings. In 1763 it burned down and was rebuilt in 1764 and embellished.
In the 1900s, Paul BENOIT acquired this building and land representing several hectares and devoted himself to his passion for rice growing.
In 1993, Jean-Louis BENOIT, grandson of Paul BENOIT, created with his wife Françoise his own marketing company of Camargue rice under the "Canavere" brand in Saint-Gilles.
He was a pioneer in this field in France, because most of the rice came from Asian countries.
It was only in 2000 that the Camargue rice was protected and obtained its own designation and "Riz de Camargue IGP" certification.
The company grew to 5 more employees. The daughters of Jean-Louis Benoit, Noémie & Clarisse joined the team in 2016 and 2018 and intend to ensure the continuation.
